Based on a personal dream, the video Roja focuses on the feeling of “displacement” of the populations, on the fear of the “foreigner” and of the “foreign land”. Similar to other works by Shirin Neshat, Roja shows the desire to reunite with her own “home” and with the “motherland”, which may seem at first empathetic but then will reveal itself terrifying and infernal.

Shirin Neshat is a contemporary Iranian visual artist best known for her work in photography, video, and film, which explore the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, antiquity and modernity, and bridging the spaces between these subjects.
